Take a break in a historical ambiance. Through the ages our farm Saint-Gillishoff has seen many welcome as well as unwelcome guests. On this page we shall point out some of the most important historical facts.

 

Its history goes back to the 14th century and even up to the Roman times. Documents tell of an Act of the goods from the year 1321  since there was already a part of today’s building that was given away. One finds from the Roman period tells more about the spot. A small turquois bottle came to the surface on gardening. In it, the Romans have taken and preserved there precious bathing oil. Also, the findings of two unique Roman sarcophagi in the community of Bocholtz and Simpelveld and the History of Bad Aachen, indicate that we are in a historically important area.

Through the centuries, the long story leads along the middle Ages, the Teutonic Knights into the French period. It was through Napoleon that the farm was confiscated and came into private hands: the hands of the ancestors of the current owners, now in the 6th generation from grandfather side of the family. Also from grandmother's side the family was already 200 years in time tenant before Napoleon confiscated the farm.

So, all together, Saint Gillishof has been 400 years in tenant and possession of the same family. Something, even the Queen of the Netherlands, would be jealous of.
